Children need to read not only because they need to but because they want to. Parents must try to convince their kids to read even though they are not required to. Reading enhances their vocabulary and comprehension skills. More so, they are able to let their imagination go wild as they are taken to places they can only picture out in their minds. Books contain a lot of information and it doesn’t matter if it’s fiction or not. Storytelling and story reading before they go to bed is a healthy routine. With this, parents and children are able to bond.
Children’s story books normally are the first kinds of books people read. When they start school, they start to understand the lessons in their textbooks. When they grow older, their book genre changes every now and then in trying to find what they like to read the most. No matter what subject or topic you are reading, as long as you like the book, your mind will still stay sharp. Perhaps one good thing you can do to the room to have a nice reading atmosphere is to put on some wall décor.
Having a room dedicated for the books can be a good idea. It doesn’t matter if the room is big or small since the books are the main foci of it. Putting a real comfortable chair or sofa can add to the ambiance of the room. More so, adding pictures and even paintings will lighten up the room even more. Individuals can stare at these if they’re not yet in the mood to read. Others find this relaxing and have a calming effect that they need after a long day of work.
A library without kids bookshelves is not complete. If you intend to separate the children’s books from your books, then might as well let the kids choose their bookcase. They can even personalize it since it is theirs after all. Do the make over yourself and let the children help too. Ask them what they want to see in their library so that they won’t get tired of going back to the room and read. They might even voluntarily go to this room and read on their own because of its inviting atmosphere. Who knows, putting some wrought iron wall plaques in the walls can do wonders.
You can also experiment on the things that you would want to hang in their library. Try making a mosaic of your children and hang this on the wall. Or let your children play with paint and then whatever they come up with, have it framed and put it also on the walls. This will make the room really THEIR room. Also, they might be even proud of themselves because they can see their artwork on the wall. Just make sure that the kids are already clean when they’ll be reading a book. The paint will surely ruin the books that they’ll be holding.
So there, if you’re planning to make a kid’s library, make sure that it’ll reflect your child’s personality. Ask him what he wants to see in this room and try to compromise. Putting some toys inside this room is not a bad idea too. Just make sure to have decorative wall shelves to make the room have a life of its own.
